Leitrim's Climate Action Plan 2024
|
A very successful meeting was held in LDCo on 12th July with Climate Action, Environment, Heritage, Biodiversity and Agriculture Linkage Group and Leitrim PPN members with Leitrim County Council's Marie Mulligan on the Leitrim Climate Action Plan (LACAP). A presentation was given by GEAI. Submissions were collated and presented to Leitrim County Council. Leitrim PPN members will be kept posted.

Final Re-Registration Reminder
|
All PPN's are requested to re-register groups and ensure the accuracy of membership records in accordance with GDPR and good governance.
First e-mail went out 14/06/2023 to all member groups. The email contained links to an online form.
The online form showed the current information on the group and corrections can be recorded on this form.
Anyone who registered in 2023 wasn’t sent a re-registration form.

- Local project maximum grant increased from €150,000 to €200,000
- Regional project maximum grant increased from €300,000 to €500,000
- Specific focus on climate action, sustainability and gender equality
A detailed list of projects that the programme funds can be found in the “Guide to Making an Application” and includes:
- natural grass sports pitches, tracks and courts (including pitch drainage)
- energy efficient floodlighting
- artificial sports pitches, tracks, courts and multi-use games areas
- security fencing, ball stop netting and goal posts
- hurling walls / handball alleys
- building or refurbishment of dressing rooms, showers and toilets
- building or refurbishment of sports halls and gyms
- non-personal sports equipment
- modifications to sports facilities to reduce energy consumption
- any other capital projects that are clearly sporting in nature and that will increase participation in sport or improve performance
Deadline: 8th September.

This scheme aims to encourage you to cycle to and from work. Under the scheme your employer can buy a bicycle and safety equipment for you. This will not be a taxable benefit-in-kind.
There are now three limits, depending on the type of bicycle purchased.
€3,000 on cargo and ecargo bikes
For pedelecs or ebikes and related safety equipment the limit is €1,500.
For other bicycles and related safety equipment the limit is now €1,250.
The following new safety equipment, if purchased with the bicycle, are also covered:
- cycle helmets
- bells and bulb horns
- lights, including dynamo packs
- mirrors and mudguards
- cycle clips and dress guards
- panniers, luggage carriers and straps
- locks and chains
- pumps, puncture repair kits, cycle tool kits and tyre sealant
- reflective clothing, white front reflectors and spoke reflectors

€1m allocated to Leitrim Co Co to Tackle Vacancy & Dereliction
|
Under this scheme, the council in Leitrim will acquire vacant/derelict properties.
Leitrim County Council has been allocated €1 million euro under the Urban Regeneration Development Fund.
The fund is specifically targeted at tackling vacancy and dereliction in cities and towns across the country with the dual benefit of improving streetscapes and providing additional housing.
Under this scheme, the council in Leitrim will acquire vacant/derelict properties which are either not on the market for sale, or to which the market has not responded.
They'll then offer these properties for private sale to individuals who in return will commit to bringing the property into use as a home.

Teagasc Student Maintenance Grants Now Open
|
The 2023/2024 Teagasc Student Maintenance Grant Scheme is now open.
To be eligible for a student grant, you must be entering an approved full-time course in Teagasc.

Certificate in Community Energy
|
For the second year running the TUS Certificate in Community Energy Development is taking place with funding support from the Digital Academy For The Sustainable Built Environment. This 24-week, level-6 programme costs €867 (reduced from €1,700) and is aimed at people from (urban/rural) communities interested in the development of sustainable energy projects and those who are involved in supporting communities to develop sustainable energy projects.
The aim of the programme is to develop the knowledge and skills of learners to be able to identify and develop appropriate sustainable energy investment opportunities in their communities.

Irish Forest & Woodland Awards
|
The Irish Forest and Woodland Awards recognise and reward farmers and woodland owners that have adopted Climate-Smart Agricultural practices on their properties. These practices include sound commercial management, environmental protection, and biodiversity. The twin goals of promoting the economic and environmental benefits of good forestry and farming are fundamental to what the RDS hopes to achieve through its agriculture and rural affairs programme.
Call for entries is open for 2024.
The winner in each of the below categories will receive €2,000 and an RDS Silver Medal. Category winners will also receive a specially commissioned trophy.
The runner-up in each category will receive €1,000 and an RDS Certificate of Merit.
3 categories - Production Forestry Award, Teagasc Farm Forestry Award Community Woodlands Award.

The Rent-a-Room Relief scheme is now open, and you could earn up to up to €14,000 a year tax free by renting a room in your home to a student.

- €15 million Fund to revitalise and regenerate rural towns and villages
- Focus on tackling vacancy and dereliction and bringing additional footfall into town centres
- New option for local authorities to acquire land for town regeneration
- Funding for outdoor projects such as plazas, parks, playgrounds and green spaces
- Grants for towns and villages that wish to develop farmer and artisan markets
- New initiative to support projects on our offshore islands

The 1916 Bursary aims to encourage participation and success by students who are most socio-economically disadvantaged and from groups most under-represented in higher education.
The 1916 Bursary is funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and aims to encourage participation and success by students who are most socio-economically disadvantaged and from groups most under-represented in higher education.
To be eligible for a 1916 Bursary, all applicants must meet, Financial, Priority Group and College Entry eligibility criteria.
Each participating college has a limited number of bursaries which are awarded to the eligible applicants that present the greatest need.

Late-Night Events (Pilot Programme) Funding
|
This project is a partnership between the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media and the Arts Council.
The Late-Night Events (Pilot Programme) 2023 intends to further extend and diversify the offering for late-night activity and provide opportunities for new and exciting work, encouraging new audiences into existing cultural facilities. It will also seek to identify and address any challenges venues may associate with staying open late.

Gaw-Yas Grannie Exhibition
|
The Gaw-Yas Grannie exhibition (meaning “Traveller Children’s Identity”) can now be viewed in Main Street Carrick-on-Shannon. Recently exhibited in The Museum of Country Life, we are delighted to welcome Gaw-Yas Grannie back to Leitrim.
This exhibition showcases a body of artwork developed by Mincéiri/Traveller children from Carrick-on-Shannon through the Gaw-Yas Grannie project, funded by CreativeIrl developed by Leitrim Arts Office and Leitrim County Council in partnership with Leitrim Development Company and Shannonside Community Centre.
The children’s artwork was created using a range of media and techniques introduced by Kate Murtagh Sheridan Visual Artist at the Shannonside Community Centre in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Western Development Commission have just published a Report
|
The population of the Western Region was 886,385 in 2022, an increase of 7.0% from 2016.
The Western development Commission have just published a report highlighting key statistics for the Western Region based on CSO (Central Statistics Office Ireland) data.
The report analyses other indicators relevant to the Western Region including gender, age, dependency ratios, health, economic status and labour characteristics, remote working and connectivity.

Killarney is Ireland’s first town to be single use coffee cup free!
|
The move to reusable cups is estimated to remove over 1 million single use coffee cups from the town annually.
An environmental levy on single-use cups is being introduced to incentivise people to choose to re-use and to help reduce single-use waste. Well done Killarney!!
